The researchers came up with a breed that produces more eggs and meat and can be reared all over the country.
The chicken breed grows faster, is resistant to diseases and its productivity is higher compared to other breeds. The chicken are not a cross breed but farmers are cautioned against cross breeding them with exotic breeds. Doing so will bring forth an offspring with unpredictable performance.
The chicken can be 1.5 kilograms in five months when other breeds take up to seven months to reach 1.5 kg but for this to happen; you must feed them 122 grams of feed per day. The chicken breed is easy to maintain and it matures faster. Kenyan farmers are given the option of keeping them for meat, as layers, or both. While other indigenous chicken can lay 35-100 eggs per year, a single Kari indigenous hen can produce 220 to 280 eggs in a year. A fully grown hen costs 600 Ksh while a cockerel costs 1000 Ksh. You can buy a day old chick from farmers who are doing breeding for the kienyeji breed or buy eggs and hatch them on your own or buy mature hens. A tray of fertilized eggs goes for 1000 Ksh. If you do not know a farmer who is doing the breeding for the kienyeji breed, you can visit the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute at Naivasha.
Kari improved chicken are gaining their popularity in Kenya due to their better yield. They produce more tender meat with less fat and are highly adaptable. The chicken can be reared in semi-free range and free range systems although if you have a large piece of land you should try the free range system. The free range system has proven to produce more nutritious meat and eggs since the chicken will scratch the ground and find food such as termites. It needs proper hygiene and fencing. You can also give the chicken grains and commercial feeds. Vaccinating the chicken is done in the same way as with other breeds.
